Project Summary
“From the Forest to the Sea” Science Camp hosted 66 campers in seven multi-day sessions during the summer of 2002. Campers come from Cordova and all over Alaska. Educators from the PWSSC and the Cordova Ranger District of the U.S. Forest service work together to plan and implement all aspects of the camp. Science camps are a highlight of the year for both staff and students.
“From the Forest to the Sea” camp program provides the tools and guidance for campers to understand the interdependence of all ecosystems. Hands-on education in the outdoor classroom and scientific knowledge, combined with positive experiences in the outdoors, builds a foundation for campers to grow into good stewards of the land and wise decision makers. The mission of the summer science camp is to provide the tools and guidance for campers to understand the interdependence of all ecosystems. During their stay at camp, participants learn about glaciers, wetlands, and the marine and rain forest environments while hiking, canoeing and kayaking through the ecosystems of the Copper River Delta and Prince William Sound.
Year 2003 objectives include: Development of a camp manual, establishment of a permanent site at mile 25 of the Copper River Highway and the increase of enrollment by 30%.
